April 21 to April 22, 2017
I waited too long to book a permit at nearby Point Reyes National Seashore, so was only able to get one night, a Friday. Fortunately, Ian was able to get away and join me on what was to be my first shakedown for the John Muir Trail later in the year. After the unusually wet winter, the spring wildflowers were profuse, and we enjoyed lots of great views.
We started day one from Bear Valley and took a circuitous route to Glen Camp. The trails we followed were Horse, Sky, Bayview, Inverness Ridge, Drakes View, Muddy Hollow, Coast and Glen, about 20 miles altogether. Beautiful countries and views, but the highlight for me were the whale sightings we made while walking along the Coast Trail. Given how impacted reservations are on the weekend, we were pleasantly surprised to find only a handful of campers at Glen Camp which made for a restful night. On day two, we left early and headed south before heading back to Bear Valley. The trails we followed were Glen Camp, Coast, Ocean Lake Loop, Coast, Stewart, Glen, Glen Camp and Bear Valley, about 14 miles.
